Plan for Commencement Weekend security measures

May 19, 2022

Marquette University is excited to celebrate the Class of 2022 with a weekend of events May 20-22. Marquette will host two Commencement ceremonies — one for undergraduate students and one for Graduate School and Graduate School of Management students — on Sunday, May 22, at Summerfest’s American Family Insurance Amphitheater. Attendees should plan for multiple security measures that are in place at the university and Henry Maier Festival Park to help ensure a safe celebration of the Class of 2022.

We encourage all those attending Commencement to arrive early to allow plenty of time for the security screening established by Henry Maier Festival Park, including passing through metal detection upon entry. If you are carrying any items that are not permitted, you will be requested to return those items to your vehicle. (See prohibited items below.)

The Summerfest parking lots open at 7:30 a.m. and the South Gate entrance opens at 7:45 a.m. Graduates are expected to be seated inside the amphitheater by 8:45 a.m.

The Marquette University Police Department will have an extra presence on campus for events and gatherings related to Commencement.

Detailed information is available on the Commencement website; a livestream of both ceremonies will be available on the site on May 22.

Henry Maier Festival Park security and bag policy

All Commencement attendees will enter through metal detection and should be prepared to comply with other security screening requirements instituted by Henry Maier Festival Park. All bags are subject to inspection prior to entering Henry Maier Festival Park. No backpacks or bags larger than 9x10x12 inches will be allowed on the grounds.

Please leave any unnecessary articles secured within your vehicle or at home to expedite your entry into the park. Items not allowed at Henry Maier Festival Park cannot be carried in. Special consideration may be given for parents with infants and those with medical needs.

Prohibited items include:

  • Strollers
  • Umbrellas
  • Silly string, confetti and balloons
  • Coolers
  • Lawn chairs

A full list of prohibited items is available on the Summerfest website.

Marquette University congratulates the Class of 2022 and encourages all students and families to celebrate safely.
