Four seniors in the Department of Civil, Environmental and Construction Engineering finished first in the Global Water Stewardship category of the Central States Water Environment Association’s student design competition on April 11.

The team of Alondra Gonzalez, Shayden Harvey, Faviola Perez Mercado and Alondra Rodriguez was challenged to design a centralized wastewater collection system and treatment facility for the small, heavily forested, coastal community of Montezuma, Costa Rica. The team’s design took into account unique environmental concerns and required effluent standards.

As a result, CSWEA has offered the students paid travel to Montezuma to present the solution to community representatives and assist in developing parameters for next year’s competition.

This project stems from the team’s work in senior design and offered an opportunity to present in a broader professional competition. Their senior design project involves additional parameters, and the team is eager to deliver their work again during Design Day 2022.
