Dr. Alan Burkard named WSCA Mary Gehrke-McAllister Leadership Award recipient

Dr. Alan Burkard, professor and chair of counselor education and counseling psychology, was awarded the 2022 Wisconsin School Counselor Association’s Mary Gehrke-McAllister Leadership Award. 

The award recognizes those persons who have provided outstanding leadership to the school counseling profession in Wisconsin. He was recognized in November 2021 at the Wisconsin School Counselor Association’s Annual Conference, which takes place each year in Wisconsin Dells. 

Burkard has been a leader in school counseling on many levels and currently is the coordinator of the school counseling program at Marquette. Burkard provides guidance to students and supports them in their path as they connect with professionals in the community and develop their identity as school counselors. 

He hires faculty who are also leaders in the field of school counseling and develops courses that are innovative and transformative for students. He is committed to developing new school counselors that are confident leaders in the field. 

Burkard has also been a prolific researcher, investigating how various topics such as racial identity and the American School Counselor Association National Model impacts youth. His articles and chapters have appeared in top-tier publications. He has served as both the Wisconsin School Counselor Association and American School Counselor Association president during his career.
