Getting to know transfer student Donna Curran in honor of National Transfer Student Week

College: College of Health Sciences

Major: Speech Pathology and Audiology

Anticipated Graduation Year: Spring 2022

Hometown: Mauston, Wis.

Previous Institution: Xavier University

What brought you to MU?

I committed to Xavier with an undecided major but was thinking of majoring in something related to business or political science. As I started taking classes I realized that I was not very passionate about those majors. So, having no idea what I wanted to do, I randomly shadowed a speech pathologist and loved it! Since Xavier does not have a speech pathology major, I decided to transfer to Marquette and am so happy about the decision.

What has been the biggest adjustment for you after transferring?

Feeling like it was my first year of college again. It felt like I had just gotten used to Xavier, I knew which buildings were which, knew my professors, and had great friends. It was a little overwhelming having to do it all again at a new school.

What is your favorite thing to do in Milwaukee?

Watch the sunrise at the lakefront or go rock-climbing at Turner Hall.

What are your post-graduation goals?

I will be going to graduate school for my master’s in speech pathology.

What keeps you at MU?

My professors and friends! I’ve made so many connections through my program and have had a lot of opportunities provided to me that I never would have had at Xavier or at most other schools.

What do you want the Marquette community to know about transfer students?

That it can be a hard adjustment but other students and staff being welcoming and kind can help so much.
