The American Psychological Association recently published a new set of guidelines for the clinical practice of psychologists titled “APA Guidelines on Evidence-Based Psychological Practice in Health Care.”
Dr. Tim Melchert, professor of counselor education and counseling psychology in the College of Education, was one of five coauthors who developed the guidelines.
The APA guidelines, which are available online, are highly visible within psychology and represent a major development for behavioral health care in the United States. They provide a standard approach for psychologists working in all types of behavioral health care practice and with all types of patients. They also provide guidance for practicing psychologists, educators preparing students for careers in behavioral health care and students entering the field. The guidelines went through a multi-year review process before being approved as official policy of the APA.
