The Department of Theology will host its annual Theotokos Lecture on Thursday, March 4, from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Dr. Natalie Carnes, associate professor of theology at Baylor University, will present this year’s lecture. Carnes will offer a feminist theological examination of the meanings to be found in imagery related to the Blessed Virgin Mary, especially the icon “Our Lady of Ferguson,” which depicts the Mother of God and her Christ child as Black, and targeted. Carnes thus pioneers a Mariology that can serve as a resource in addressing the concerns of women and people of color alike, in the process discovering an image of the Virgin that can bless all and everyone.
