University mourns the loss of Sister Bernadette Prochaska

Marquette University mourns the loss of Sister Bernadette (Melissa) Prochaska, FSPA. She died at the age of 88 on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2021, after her battle with pancreatic cancer.

In 1981 Sister Bernadette began a career of 36 years at Marquette as an instructor, associate professor, professor of English and assistant dean. While at Marquette, she played the organ at Gesu Parish and after retiring from teaching English, she ministered as receptionist at the parish until December 2016.

For many years Sister Bernadette lived in university apartments, staying in Abbotsford Hall even after it transitioned to a freshman residence hall. She was known for her gracious attention and hospitality toward students, frequently hosting them for gatherings in her apartment.

A virtual sharing of Sister Bernadette’s life will take place tonight, Thursday, Jan. 7, at 6:30 p.m. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Bernadette will be live-streamed on Friday, Jan. 8, at 10 a.m. Read the full obituary for more information.

Memorials may be sent to Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration (912 Market St., La Crosse, WI 54601-4782).
