‘Unlearning Racism’ series begins Sept. 24

The Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion will offer another series of its “Unlearning Racism” program

Led by Dr. Martha Barry, racial justice director of the YWCA of Southeast Wisconsin, and Dr. LG Shanklin-Flowers, title, this five-part virtual series will develop participants’ capacity to discuss and address issues of racism.  

The program seeks to help participants:

  • Foster personal commitment to address racism
  • Build meaningful relationships
  • Become equipped with tools to imagine and build richer relationships across racial differences
  • Gain knowledge and an understanding of:
    • Implicit bias
    • The historical implications of race
    • The role of economic disparity in housing segregation
    • The meaning of whiteness and internalized racism

Participation will be limited to 60 people. Participants are asked to commit to the full five-session series: 

  • Thursday, Sept. 24, 10 a.m. to noon 
  • Thursday, Oct. 1, 10 a.m. to noon 
  • Thursday, Oct. 8, 10 a.m. to noon 
  • Thursday, Oct. 22, 10 a.m. to noon 
  • Thursday, Oct. 29, 10 a.m. to noon
