University mourns the loss of Rev. Thomas Tobin, S.J., former Board of Trustees member

Marquette University mourns the loss of Rev. Thomas Tobin, S.J., who passed away on Sunday, Aug. 30, at the age of 74.

Father Tobin was elected to the Marquette University Board of Trustees in 1998; in 2010, he became an emeritus trustee.

A Chicago native, Father Tobin graduated from Quigley Seminary South and studied for two years at Niles College Seminary.

He entered the Society of Jesus on Aug. 12, 1964. He was ordained in 1973 and he professed final vows in 1992 at the Madonna della Strada Chapel on Loyola University Chicago’s campus.

Father Tobin earned a bachelor’s degree in literature from Xavier University. He received an MA in theology from Loyola University Chicago and a PhD in New Testament and Christian Origins from Harvard University. He also studied rabbinic literature for a year at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Father Tobin taught theology at Xavier University in Cincinnati from 1969 to 1970. After earning his PhD, he then went on to spend forty years teaching theology at Loyola. In spring 2020, Father Tobin retired from Loyola University to devote more time to research and writing.

A visitation will take place on Thursday, Sept. 3, at 4 p.m. at the Madonna della Strada Chapel at Loyola University Chicago (6453 N. Kenmore Ave, Chicago, IL 606660). A funeral Mass will follow at 5 p.m.
