The Human Library Organization began in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 2000, as a way for people to challenge their biases toward marginalized groups. In lieu of physical books, the library consists of volunteers who would take appointments with patrons for one-on-one conversations.

It was only after an online application, a four-person panel interview that lasted half a day, a written exam, a year’s wait and another three months of orientation that Dr. Jessica Zemlak finally learned where she was going: Abuja, Nigeria.
