16th Street Bridge to close for rehabilitation work in August

The City of Milwaukee will begin rehabilitation work on the 16th Street Bridge over the Menomonee River on Thursday, July 31. The project is expected to run through October 2026.

The bridge will not close to traffic immediately upon project start. The project team anticipates closing the bridge to traffic in late August. An update on the closure date will be shared in Marquette Today when available.

During construction, the bridge will close to motor vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian traffic between W. Clybourn Street and S. Emmber Lane. Two-way traffic will be maintained between S. Emmber Lane and W. Pierce Street.

Pedestrian movement will be maintained via stairways at St. Paul Avenue and Canal Street.

A two-directional bus detour will be in place for Route 24. Bus, motor vehicle and bicycle traffic should follow the marked detour route.
