The Marquette University Medical Clinic has registered to become a COVID-19 vaccinator and anticipates registration approval in the near future.
Once approved and once vaccines become available, the university will begin rolling out the vaccine to students, faculty and staff based on their priority group. Marquette will follow priority guidelines from the City of Milwaukee Health Department and the State of Wisconsin Department of Health Services. As defined, vaccines will be rolled out in the following order of priority:
- Group 1A: Health care workers
- Group 1B: People above 70 years of age and essential workers (Wisconsin’s essential worker category includes faculty and staff with direct student contact)
- Group 1C: Individuals with high-risk conditions, ages 65-74 and other essential workers
Distribution to the general population is not expected until later this spring.
1A health care workers on campus began receiving vaccinations this week through the City of Milwaukee and other sources. 1A health care workers include Medical Clinic staff and clinical faculty and staff who have direct patient care in Marquette’s on-campus clinics. Additional 1A workers to be vaccinated in the coming weeks may also include first responders and clinical students.
After Marquette’s registration has been approved and the Medical Clinic receives confirmation of how many vaccine doses it will be receiving, the clinic will work directly with departments across campus to determine next steps of notification and vaccine delivery to individuals who fall into the three priority groups.
Because risk of severe health outcomes from COVID-19 in young adults without underlying health conditions is relatively low (whereas faculty, university staff and close contacts of college students at home and in the community might be at a considerably higher risk for severe illness and death if they were to become infected), the Wisconsin State Disaster Medical Advisory Committee Vaccine Subcommittee is not recommending vaccinating individuals in post-secondary educational “dorm” situations at this time. Additionally, the subcommittee recommends limiting vaccination in Wisconsin’s 1b category to faculty and staff with direct student contact.
Employees – especially those in priority categories as defined by the City of Milwaukee Health Department and those with vulnerable conditions – may be able to receive the vaccine sooner from other sources (i.e. primary care doctor, hospital system, etc.) and are encouraged to do so.
The university will not require all employees to get the vaccine, though it will be strongly encouraged once it becomes available to your priority group.
