Faculty and staff recognized for excellence in research, teaching and service

The university announced this week the 2020 faculty and staff award winners for the following research, teaching and service awards.

RESEARCH
Dr. Steven Avella, professor of history received the Haggerty Research Award.

Dr. Dmitri Babikov, professor of chemistry, and Dr. Sarah Gendron, associate professor of French, received the Way Klingler Fellowship Award.

The following four professors were named 2020 Way Klingler Young Scholars:


TEACHING
Dr. Cedric Burrows, assistant professor of English, received the Excellence in Diversity and Inclusion Faculty Award.

The following four professors received Teaching Excellence Awards:

Earlier this year, Dr. Grant Silva, associate professor of philosophy in the Klingler College of Arts and Sciences, was named the 2020-21 Way Klingler Sabbatical Award winner.

Three professors in the Klingler College of Arts and Sciences were also named the 2020 Way Klingler Teaching Enhancement Award recipients earlier this year:

  • Dr. Darren Wheelock, associate professor of social and cultural sciences
  • Dr. Theresa Tobin, associate dean for academic affairs and student development
  • Dr. Robert Smith, Harry G. John Professor of History and director of CURTO (the Center for Urban Research, Teaching and Outreach)

STAFF
Mary Minson, senior assistant dean of advising in the Klingler College of Arts and Sciences, received the Excellence in Diversity and Inclusion Staff Award.

Four staff members received Excellence in University Service Awards:

  • Steve Frieder, senior advisor to the president
  • Stacy Tuchel, office associate for the Office of Marketing and Communication
  • Neelima Tummala, assistant director of systems for the Office of Finance (Student Financial Aid)
  • Deb Weaver, administrative assistant for undergraduate programs and department inquiries, Department of Biological Sciences, Klingler College of Arts and Sciences

Due to coronavirus, the events in which these awards would normally be presented – Père Marquette Dinner, Staff Excellence Awards Luncheon and Distinguished Scholars Reception – have all been postponed to fall 2020. Details with be shared via Marquette Today once available.

Additionally, each honoree will be individually featured in Marquette Today throughout the summer.
