Students and employees reminded of safety alert process

September 25, 2019

The university community is reminded of the process for receiving text message alerts in the case that a safety alert is sent to campus.

Please remember that safety alerts are sent to Marquette students, faculty and staff when there is an active threat to campus. A text notification is sent first, followed by an email with additional information about the incident.

To make sure you are signed up to receive text alerts, read the information below pertaining to each audience:

  • For students
To receive MUPD safety alerts, as well as weather-related closing information, enroll in the university’s emergency text messaging system by entering your cell phone number in the “Personal Information” section of CheckMarq. The phone number listed must be labeled as “mobile” in order to receive texts – if it’s listed as “home” you won’t receive text alerts.
Please note: If your family’s home phone number or a parent’s cell phone number is listed here, you may not be receiving safety text alerts. Make sure to change this in CheckMarq.
  • For parents
Safety alerts are posted to MUPD’s Twitter account, @MarquettePD. The program Marquette uses to send safety alert texts to students does not allow parents to sign up to receive alerts directly.
  • For faculty and staff
To opt in to receive text alerts from the university, faculty and staff must make sure their personal phone number is listed in the “Personal Information” section of MyJob. The phone number listed must be labeled as “mobile” in order to receive texts – if it’s listed as “home” you won’t receive text alerts.

All students, faculty and staff are also encouraged to download MUPD’s safety app, EagleEye. The app features a mobile BlueLight feature, which allows users to press a button in the app that connects them directly to MUPD and sends the device’s location in real-time, as long as location services are turned on.

The EagleEye app also includes a Friend Walk feature, which allows students to track their friends’ locations from point A to point B.

Additional features of the free app include:

  • Emergency contacts
  • Mobile BlueLight (when on campus)
  • Safety toolbox
  • Emergency procedures guide
  • Support resources
  • Follow MUPD Nattie
  • Social media links

The app is free and available for download from the Apple App Store and Google Play for Android; it can also be found by searching “Marquette EagleEye” in either app store.

Additionally, the Marquette community is encouraged to follow MUPD on Twitter @MarquettePD for safety resources, events and safety alert updates.
