When Alyssa Duetsch, a senior in the Diederich College of Communication and an intern in the Office of Marketing and Communication, started working on a video project about Marquette’s power lifting team, she had no idea how much the team would impact her nor the larger impact the team is leaving on the university and across the globe.
Duetsch quickly realized there is a lot more to the sport than just lifting heavy weights after shadowing Powerlifting Club President Maria Baltazar, a junior in the Klingler College of Arts and Sciences, and learning what the sport is about: community, self-improvement and women empowerment.
The club’s faculty adviser, Dr. Noelle Brigden, assistant professor of political science, saw the personal benefits of powerlifting, inspiring her to launch a program and gym in El Salvador, for which Marquette’s club now helps fundraise and find equipment.
