Tamara Johnson first met Dwayne Wade in 2010 when Wade made a visit to Marquette’s campus. He was coming to welcome the Youth of the Year winners to campus.
The Youth of the Year Scholarship was made possible through a national partnership between Marquette University, the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and Wade’s nonprofit organization, Wade’s World Foundation.
Johnson and Wade recently reconnected when Johnson participated in a video tribute to honor Wade’s final NBA season.
Johnson was among the first group of students to receive the Boys & Girls Club scholarship. “The scholarship has forever changed my life. It was always my dream to attend college outside of New Mexico and once I began to research Marquette, it became my dream to attend Marquette, however, I could not afford to attend college outside of New Mexico.”
