The Diederich College of Communication’s Department of Journalism and Media Studies invites you to participate in an online symposium honoring the life and career of Dr. John J. Pauly.
Dr. Pauly passed away on Saturday, Aug. 11, after a battle with cancer. Pauly had a long and distinguished career serving as the provost of Marquette University, the dean of the Diederich College of Communication and as chair of the Department of Journalism and Media Studies. Pauly also served for nine years as chair of the communications department at Saint Louis University.
Pauly was a gifted writer, academic and mentor, receiving awards for both his teaching and scholarship. His academic interests included the history and sociology of the mass media, the theory and practice of literary journalism and cultural approaches to communication research. As importantly, Pauly was a noted and highly respected administrator with an ability to connect with people.
For the online symposium, share your thoughts about Dr. Pauly in a 250 to 500-word essay. Participants may have known Pauly in several ways, such as a colleague, scholar, mentor or friend. Essays do not need to be constrained to any specific area and may include memories of Pauly outside the realm of academics.
Once the essays have been received, they will be organized thematically and posted on the Diederich College website.
To participate, submit your essay to johnpaulytributes@marquette.edu by Friday, Nov. 30. With any questions, contact Dr. Ana Garner, professor and chair of journalism and media studies.
