The Office of Mission and Ministry’s series, “Holding Truth–Engaging Faith: Exploring Clergy Sexual Abuse in the Church–from the Inside Out,” will continue with sessions on Oct. 23 and Oct. 30.
Second session: Tuesday, Oct. 23, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in AMU 163
The second session will focus on the long-term arc of clergy abuse in the Catholic Church, its impact on child victims of sexual abuse, and the ongoing ripple effects to families, loved ones and the faith community. We will also discuss the Charter for the Protection of Children and other efforts to monitor and report child sexual abuse in the Catholic Church since 2002.
Guest Speakers include:
- Jan Ruidl, RN, MDiv., a survivor of childhood clergy abuse, a retired parish director in the Archdioceses of Milwaukee, the current chair of the Review Board for the Capuchin Friars of St. Joseph Province and an advocate for survivors of clergy sexual abuse.
- Amy Peterson, a past victim advocate for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee and current director of pastoral care and conciliation for the Capuchin Friars of St. Joseph Province. Additionally, Peterson has served as consultant with Praesidium, the monitoring organization for many religious orders, including the Jesuits.
Third session: Tuesday, Oct. 30, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in AMU 163
This session will explore the spiritual effects of clergy sexual abuse in the Church, specifically how to define this harm, how to know who has been harmed by spiritual abuse related to clergy abuse and the ripple effects of the abuse on the community.
Guest Speakers include:
- Dr. Theresa Tobin, associate professor of philosophy and associate dean in the graduate school.
- Dr. Conor Kelly, assistant professor of theology.
- Dr. Kathy Coffey-Guenther, associate vice president for the Office of Mission and Ministry and former clinician and trauma specialist with survivors of clergy sexual abuse.
