Spatial data analytics workshop to be held Jan. 10-12

November 30, 2017

The Marquette community is invited to attend an interdisciplinary workshop focused the utility of spatial data analytics for complex human endeavors from Wednesday, Jan. 10, through Friday, Jan. 12, in Lalumiere 130.

The workshop intends to enhance the educational experience of Marquette University undergraduate students through interactive hands-on learning activities for various complex issues, including careful studies of neighborhood crime patterns, ethical approaches in data science, and responsible management of water resources.

Additionally, the workshop will support reflective and critical assessments of learned tasks that emphasize the applicability of the learned tasks for these three different human endeavors while engaging community stakeholders in student learning by providing a venue where community representatives concerned with neighborhood crime patters, data science, and water resources will engage our students in the practical aspect of the learned skills (e.g., the utility of spatial data analytics for law enforcement, financial and risk-management, and municipal decision-making).

This unique workshop will create a learning environment that capitalizes on experiences of students from different intellectual backgrounds while bringing together a team of scholars from three departments within the Klingler College of Arts and Sciences

The daily schedule is as follows:

  • 8:30 a.m. – registration and breakfast, Lalumiere 177
  • 9 a.m. to noon – workshop
  • noon to 1 p.m. – lunch
  • 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. – self-reflection and engagement with community stakeholders

Students who are interested in participating should email Dr. Alexsandra Snowden, assistant professor of social and cultural sciences, with the subject line “Application for Workshop on Spatial Data Analytics.” In the email application students should describe in about 100 words their interest in the workshop.
