Marquette’s Center for Cyber Security Awareness and Cyber Defense has responded to an international alert regarding ransomware.
An international alert and continuing news has revealed that ransomware was being spread to at least 150 countries. This attack combined a worm, a malware that looks for ways to spread, with a “payload” ransomware, asking for a ransom of $300 Bitcoin to free up locked files by malware.
Simple measures could have saved files from the infectious nature of this incident. The following measures are advised to avoid disruption from these types of events.
- Keep a clean machine– Get the latest versions of software. Consider using automatic updates for your services, apps and operating system.
- Be web safe– Be aware of threats, think before acting, back up valuable work and do not install malware removal tools from untrusted sites.
