This month the National Cyber Security Alliance reminds us to do Digital Spring Cleaning, which should be an annual ritual for all. Marquette’s Center for Cyber Security Awareness and Cyber Defense suggest the following to get your digital life in order by reducing digital clutter and securing your digital identity:
- Make sure all of your software is up-to-date with the latest version since vendors regularly make changes to increase cybersecurity
- If you don’t use an app, it might be a good idea to just remove it from your computers, tablets, and smartphones
- If you haven’t changed your passwords on important accounts, now would be a good time to select good passphrases that are memorable to you and unique for each site. Consider multifactor authentication where it is available
- Clean up email by deleting items and unsubscribing to distributions you no longer need
- Back up important items that are a priority for you
- Review privacy and security settings on social media sites
- Shred files that contain personal sensitive information that are not required and consider encryption for those you must keep
- Empty the trash or recycle bins on your devices and email accounts
