Marquette University’s College of Education has announced a new major for undergraduate studies that will begin this upcoming fall, in time for the 2017-18 academic year.
The new major, Educational Studies, is an interdisciplinary major for students interested in working in educational arenas outside traditional classroom teaching environments. Students declaring for the new major will be able to pursue careers in informal learning environments such as zoos, recreational programs, museums, ecology centers and a wide range of non-profit organizations and foundations.
“This exciting new major grew out of a need for education professionals who can bring 21st century skills to bear in a variety of unique work contexts,” said College of Education Dean Bill Henk. “We’re genuinely delighted to soon provide a wealth of community organizations with the human capital they require to intensify and expand their educational impact.”
Educational Studies majors, who are housed in the Department of Education Policy and Leadership, will also be positioned to complete graduate or professional programs in disciplines such as educational policy, psychology, counseling, social work, communications, organizational leadership, higher education, or law, among others. Students will complete coursework similar to current College of Education undergraduate students while gaining valuable experience through internships and seminars.
