The Marquette community is invited to Soup with Substance on Wednesday, Feb. 1, from noon to 1 p.m. in AMU Room 157. Rev. Jim Martin, S.J., will join the event via Skype. He will speak on the Catholic Church and the LGBT community coming together to form a relationship of mutual respect, compassion and sensitivity. The discussion will be followed by a Q & A session.
Father Martin is a Jesuit priest, author and editor-at-large at America, the Jesuit Review magazine. He received an honorary doctor of letters degree from Marquette University in May 2014 when he served as the Commencement speaker. His most recent book is Jesus: A Pilgrimage (HarperOne), a New York Times bestseller, which combines travel narrative, biblical study and spiritual reflections on the life of Christ. In 2011, he published Between Heaven and Mirth: Why Joy, Humor and Laughter are at the Heart of the Spiritual Life, (HarperOne), which was named as one of “Best Books” of the year by Publishers Weekly. In 2013, HarperOne published an e-book Together on Retreat: Meeting Jesus in Prayer, which uses the technology of the e-reader to lead readers on a guided retreat.
Inspired by the round table discussions of Peter Maurin and the Catholic Worker Movement, Soup with Substance is a noontime series of presentations on contemporary issues related to peacemaking and social justice. The event is sponsored by the Center for Peacemaking, Campus Ministry and the Center for Intercultural Engagement.
