Proposals for second J-session courses due Feb. 15

January 17, 2017

The second Marquette J-session will run from Monday, Dec. 18, 2017, to Sunday, Jan. 14, 2018. Proposals for courses to be taught during J-session can be submitted to John Su, vice provost for academic affairs, by the end of the business day on Wednesday, Feb. 15. Proposals should include the following information:

  1. Course title
  2. Subject area and course number
  3. Requirements fulfilled by course (e.g., University Core of Common Studies or major)
  4. Format (fully online, hybrid, classroom-based)
  5. Number of weeks course will run and proposed dates of course
    1. Note 1: the contact hours for the credits offered must be met, regardless of the shortened time frame
    2. Note 2: while J-session will run during the interval of Dec 19, 2016 to Jan 14, 2017, instructors can design courses of shorter duration (e.g., three weeks) as long as contact hours are met
  6. Anticipated number of students
  7. Description of course (please include tentative syllabus)
  8. Signature or addendum indicating chair’s support or recommendation (or dean if there is no intermediary department)

J-session courses will be paid as an overload stipend at the same rate as summer courses. They will not be considered part of a faculty member’s normal teaching load.

Faculty are encouraged to submit courses that will assist students with meeting Core of Common Studies or other major requirements, which have been shown to be effective for J-session courses taught at other institutions. Other experiences or courses that would be fitting for this intensive, compressed format, or for engaging students intensively, are welcomed. The number of courses accepted will be limited to ensure high quality of content and sufficient university infrastructure to support their delivery; however, the offerings will be judiciously expanded. A faculty committee will review and recommend the courses based on enrollment needs, capacity and quality of proposal.

To assist in the development of approved courses, the Center for Teaching and Learning has a limited number of professional development grants that will be made available to instructors.

Questions can be directed to Su.
