Dr. Sarah Feldner, associate professor and associate dean of graduate studies in the Diederich College of Communication, has been named Marquette’s new director of the University Core of Common Studies, Provost Dan Myers announced today. Feldner will begin her new role immediately.
“I’m delighted that Dr. Feldner has agreed to lead the Core of Common Studies, one of the foundations of Marquette’s transformative Catholic, Jesuit education,” Provost Myers said. ”She’s an engaging leader who believes strongly in the important role that the core curriculum plays in our commitment to students.”
“I envision a core curriculum as the defining experience of a Marquette education, regardless of a student’s major,” Feldner said. “I am excited to lead ongoing conversations about how we faculty might implement a core curriculum to meet the needs and aspirations of our students. Delivering a curriculum to meet the challenge of the 21st century, while remaining committed to a centuries old spiritual and intellectual tradition is no simple task, but it is one that I am eager to take on.”
Feldner, whose research focuses on organizational communication, mission and identity, served on the Core of Common Studies Review Committee for six years and is currently working with the Core Revision Facilitation Group. Additionally, Feldner chaired the University Board of Undergraduate Studies, has worked closely with the Center for Teaching and Learning, and participated in several faculty programs with the Office of Mission and Ministry.
She has been recognized for her commitment to teaching, winning the Raynor Faculty Award for Teaching Excellence in 2012 and the Diederich College of Communication Dean’s Recognition Award for Teaching Excellence in 2004.
