Marquette President Michael R. Lovell, Interim Provost and Dean of the College of Nursing Dr. Margaret Callahan and Provost-elect Dr. Daniel Myers have initiated a two-year revision process for the University Core of Common Studies. The official charge, timeline, and the roles and responsibilities of groups across campus during the revision process can be found on the provost website.
“The University Core of Common Studies touches the lives of all students across our eight undergraduate colleges,” President Lovell said. “The revision process should embody the values of our Jesuit tradition and embrace innovative pedagogies for teaching students to flourish in the 21st century.” Campus-wide conversations on revising the University Core of Common Studies will begin fall of 2015, with the goal of developing two to three preliminary frameworks in spring 2016. Both Callahan and Myers noted their expectation that the revision process would be collaborative, transparent and faculty-driven.
To facilitate campus conversations and the revision process, President Lovell, Callahan and Myers named the Core Revision Facilitation Group:
- Dr. John Su, professor of English and director of the University Core of Common Studies (chair)
- Dr. Lowell Barrington, associate professor and chair of political science
- Dr. Sarah Feldner, associate professor and associate dean for graduate programs and research, Diederich College of Communication
- Dr. Lars Olson, associate professor and interim chair of biomedical engineering
The Core Revision Facilitation Group will report to Dr. Gary Meyer, vice provost for undergraduate programs and teaching, and will work closely with faculty across the undergraduate colleges and university committees to meet the goal of a revised University Core of Common Studies, effective fall 2017.
